What Are Kinases?
Definition: A Kinase is an enzyme that mediates the transfer of phosphate groups to substrates. Phosphorylation of a substrate can alter its ability to interact with other molecules and its activity. For this reason kinases are important in numerous processes including; signalling, metabolism and transport among many others.
Kinases are a large family of enzymes with over 500 encoded in the human genome and all share a highly conserved kinase domain. Dependent on the substrate they act upon they can be broadly classified into 3 categories: protein kinases, carbohydrate kinases and lipid kinases.
