Basic phenotyping conducted by experts so you can interpret your data with confidence
Horizon Discovery offers the functional observational battery (FOB) as part of our Pathfinder Phenotyping Platform. This important phenotypic assay is performed by our partner, InterVivo Solutions, a leader in rodent behavioral assays. Evaluating animals for gross physiological and neurological deficits, the FOB is based upon the gold-standard Irwin test, and serves as an initial phenotypic characterization of your transgenic line. It is important to conduct a proper FOB to ensure that an undetected physiological or neurological defect does not jeopardize a laboratory animal’s ability to perform key tasks or confound data interpretation.

Modified Irwin Testing Battery
Modified Irwin Testing, as conducted by InterVivo Solutions, includes a multitude of parameters based upon the original definition by Samuel Irwin of the University of Oregon (Irwin 1968).
Home Cage Observations
- Body posture
- Coat appearances
- Ptosis/Eyelid Position
Open Field Observations
- Sterotypic behavior
- Various responses and reflexes
- Ease of handling
- Abdominal tone
- Eye blink response
- Eye and skin color
- Body temperature
Pathfinder Functional Observational Battery (FOB) uses:
The Functional Observational Battery is an initial phenotypic characterization of a transgenic animal, and can be performed on:
- SAGEspeed Custom Models
Jump right into your experiments and hit the ground running with your new model. There is no need to set up and learn new characterization assays in your lab or spend the time performing this initial characterization.
- SAGE Catalog Research Models
Hit the ground running with a deeper understanding of our catalog models.
- Transgenic Rat or Mouse Models
Simply send us your model and we’ll take care of the rest.
The FOB assesses the potential neurotoxicity of compounds and small molecule therapeutics. Neurotoxicity screening with the Pathfinder FOB can be performed on:
