Autism spectrum disorders are characterized by deficits in social behavior, language, cognition, and the presence of stereotyped and repeated behaviors and interests. unfortunately the underlying cause of autism remains unknown, however recent studies have suggested a genetic basis, and in vivo models are playing a key role in further investigations. Novel knockout rat models of autism have been developed by Horizon Discovery in partnership with Autism Speaks, and are proving to be a key tool that promises to help facilitate the understanding, and ultimately treatment, of Autism disorders.
